Making Munchies for a Horde!

Recently we had a fiesta and decided to make our own plantain chips - so easy and economical! A small bag of plantain chips will cost you 26.95 cordobas for a 155g bag. You can make your own for way less. We bought 10 green plantains at 3.5 cordobas each and it produced a large bowl full - enough for the whole crowd.

All you have to do is heat some oil in a pot. Skin the plantain. Slice the plantain very thin. Cook the plantain slices in the hot oil until golden brown. Remove from oil and drain on paper towel. Sprinkle with salt and a little Chili pepper. These are a real crowd pleaser!

As an alternative you can peel and thinly slice yucca - also very economical and tasty!

use green plantain

peel and slice thin

cook in oil until brown

drain on paper towel - lightly salt

you can use Yucca too - peel and slice thin

Sutiava Market (El Mercadito), León, Nicaragua

Vegetable stand at the Sutiava market
A short distance away from the city centre - on the west side of León  - you will find an indigenous neighbourhood called Sutiava. It is here that you will find a small market - the smallest of the four in León - nicknamed El Mercadito. If you like fresh seafood then this is the market you want to visit - early in the morning is best time to get the freshest fish, shrimp, crab and other goodies from the sea.

From the south side of the Central Market you can find either a bus or camionetta that will take you to Sutiava. Heading to the beach? It is from El Mercadito that you will find the bus that will take you to the beaches of Poneloya and Las Peñitas.

Movie Night in Leon

If you like to go to the movies there is a excellent theater here in Leon. Plaza Siglo Nuevo is a three theater movie house that is a great place to cool down (air conditioned) and enjoy a movie with some friends. The theater is just east of La Union Supermercado. The movie that I watched was played in English with Spanish subtitles. The three movies playing on the night I went were:
Savages Movie Poster
Skyfall Movie Poster
Looper Movie Poster

The last time I went to the movies I had to take out a small bank loan so that my wife and I could relax for a couple of hours. This time however it was quite affordable, just C$70. That is just under $3.00 US. See here is my ticket:

I received another big surprise when I got inside. For about the same price as my ticket I could buy a large popcorn and a large drink. So for $6.00 per person you can have a relaxing evening out. The food choices are hot dogs, nachos and cheese, popcorn, candy, chocolate bars, bags of nacho chips, plus other items that I do not remember.

The following three pictures are of the inside of this modern theater:

New Lunch Spot in León - Heydo

After a long, hot morning of checking every second hand store in town (or at least that's what it seemed) we were ready for something to eat. We came across this quaint, little cafe - Heydo - and were pleasantly surprised.

The menu includes a nice selection of sandwiches, paninis, wraps and salads. They also have fresh, natural juices and a variety of hot and cold coffee and espresso. Not to be missed are the delicious desserts.

Are you on vacation and need to keep connected? This is a good location to grab breakfast and catch up on all those emails with their free wifi.

They are located north of the cathedral beside the Galeria de Arte de Occidente. Be sure to check them out when you are downtown.
